"Hands Across the Universe"

From the  University of California at Berkeley, SETI@home brings the extraterrestrial universe to your desktop by running a program, either as a screensaver or in the background, that downloads chunks of data retrieved by a radio telescope scanning the universe. It then processes the data (by using up a lot of CPU resources) and sends results back to the central server at Berkeley so that you and many, many others can hunt for signs of extraterrestrial life--from your desktop.
